The B setting is useful for taking long exposures in low light or for subjects such as fireworks. This is sometimes referred to as Open shutter as the film or digital sensor integrates the light, sometimes movement, during the period the shutter stays open.

No scanning is required as the device captures the whole image at once. This is called a field array. The software that works out the finished data does a process know as de-mosaicing. The Foveon chip is the only sensor that records red, green and blue values at the same physical point in the image, having a layered structure.
